While he made a lot of noise about creating his “man cave,” he also took classes in cake decorating and baking. (And seriously, why would anyone object to that?!) He valued taking care of his nails and growing out his hair and wearing it in a ponytail. But. But! He was simultaneously strict with how the sexes should relate to each other in a marriage.

What am I saying? I’m saying, would you just take a fucking look at this? And this is what happens, time after time, when these arguments come around. I’m tired of it. Can you get why maybe women want a space for women-born-women only? Can you get why we don’t want these people next to us at MichFest?

Legalized Prostitution is a Failure
In the past decade or so, several countries, including the Netherlands and Germany, have toyed with legalizing prostitution. They did so because it was argued that legitimizing the industry would lead to greater health regulations and protections for sex workers. It was thought that legalization would lessen the stigma to sex work, reduce human trafficking and result in a win-win-win: prostitutes, customers (“johns” or “punters”) and society would all be better off.
Ten years into the experiment and none of those things have come to pass, according to a detailed (read: lengthy) article in Germany’s Der Spiegel magazine. The article is here and well worth a read. But as it spans five pages, I’ll try to sum it up as best I can.

But there’s another kind that that’s more insidious, and that happens when male-to-female transgender people try to become living stereotypes of all that women are supposed to be, circa 1958.

I was taking a tour of a local factory as part of some announcement or other. I’d been there several times, as it was a major local employer and covering that industry was the key part of my beat. I felt pretty comfortable there, and many of the employees knew me on a first-name basis. So when one of the workers called me over to his work area, I thought nothing of it. I didn’t know the guy, but he seemed to know me. And then he said, “What do you think about this?” He yanked a magazine off of a corkboard near his workstation and flashed it at me: a rather boring pin-up picture of an airbrushed woman wearing a thong and a bikini top that did nothing other than cover the nipples.

Gender Immigrants
That’s how it is for immigrants. You leave one shore with no guarantee that the one on which you arrive will welcome you. And even if they do, there may be a lot of hurdles and roadblocks in the way. And even if you navigate all of them, there still is no guarantee of being truly welcomed. Sometimes they don’t want you, and sometimes you’re turned back. It’s the risk an immigrant takes.

This is what privilege has come to mean amongst a set of people. The only way to be seen as truly authentic is to claim as many disadvantages as possible. And if you can claim several disadvantages, that becomes a weapon you can use against opponents. Being extra super disadvantaged gives you a better vantage point from which to launch an attack.

One of the first thing a hotline volunteer learns on the job is that many of the calls that come in are made by the same group of people. We call them regulars. They may call once a week, once a day or even once an hour. Many of these regulars really do need help. Some are paranoid schizophrenics. Some are chronically lonely. I truly believed that being on the other end of that phone line for them was worthwhile.
But then there’s another sort of regular. We called them the masturbators.
